Feb 15- Birthday EVE

Day Fifteen, is the day before I have a birthday celebration. Okay, there are several scheduled events for the birthday week.

The Noble Serpent- 2721 words

I think that title needs to change.

Sure, I own third place now, but I have the odd feeling that Roberson will crush me when he starts scoring 15 points a day. And I just found we have a bragging page. So, I posted updates on the projects in play for the duration of the contest.

  1. Happy birthday, Bill. So what did you get today? While walking past the lake did you spy a green bejeweled hand thrusting an ancient sword from the waters? Did you notice an item in the personals that read: Wanted: Hero for quest, great danger, possible high rewards? Did you receive two tickets in the mail for the maiden voyage of the Zero Two Twenty? Or perhaps did you encounter a wizened old man with a strange carpet, when all you were really after was a fine meal of steak and tomatoes?

  2. I dunno. I've been playing this video game around the clock, which seems to be training me for some super-secret space mission.

Some friends are throwing a surprise party this afternoon, so it is too soon to tell. Tonight, I have dinner with Kate and tomorrow, dinner with Rachael. For now, I'm in a race with the devil to get some pages done before I punch out at 2PM. Events have conspired to give me a shot at a 10K day next week maybe, but not much more than that.

Right now, I'm listening to Dennis Miller and writing a scene where Xander is bargaining with the Naga Prince. It looks like the 2nd Haliford book will be a bit longer than the first. I hope to bundle it with other book and trot it out to another publisher. Any advice would be appreciated.

Life is good. I guess living well is the best birthday gift. Oh, and I bought myself some more Brit Mysteries on DVD.

    Excalibur, of course

    Heinlein's Glory Road?

This one - not a clue

Or perhaps did you encounter a wizened old man with a strange carpet, when all you were really after was a fine meal of steak and tomatoes?
Gulliver of Mars by Edwin Arnold?

  6. Oh no. You're so nearly a fine fellow! And unfortunately there's no Nearly a Fine Fellow Award, or Three Quarters of a Fine Fellow Award. So close.

Don't feel too bad though. Of the four other Clockwork men, only Chris could have gotten the one you missed for certain (and maybe Mark, but that's not guaranteed).

The Zero Two Twenty, or the 0220, was the lighter than air ship on which Tarzan, and a hardy crew of adventurers, set off to find the entrance to the inner world of Pelucidar.

According to that manuscript the 0220 crashed shortly after entering the inner world, but I don't buy that. I believe (and rare scraps of evidence here and there support my theory) that the 0220 has gone on, through many refits and overhauls, to find a few dozen other lost worlds since then and is still in operation today. It's a lucky soul who gets the nod to join them on one of their expeditions.

And I think I've just thought of a great idea for a theme anthology: The further Voyages of the... Well, you know.

  7. Well, 3 of 4 isn't bad, and it's good to know the copious amounts of pulp fiction I've read is somewhat useful. I always preferred Barsoom over Tarzan anyway. Some of the Tarzan stories kind of, sort of creeped me out a bit. Hmmm, then I got sidetracked into the memoirs of the first 300 NWMP (the RCMP) officers. By the way, "kind of, sort of" is an incredibly useful bit of vocabulary, and I have shameless purloined it for my use.

I love the idea of the further Voyages though.
