Day Six- A Three Hour Tour...

Today, I had a three hour task that kept me away from home and the computer until 7PM. Then I had to do a little color for SideChicks. Bottom Line, Sturges extends his lead by a metric arse load.

The man in this photo is Steve Lieber and he was on the set of WHITEOUT. Kind of reminds me of the last shot of John Larroquette in STRIPES.

Favorite Panel from yesterday-

Panel Four

Dagny is making a face behind the scarf. Her eyes are wide and she is more than a little scared.

Caption (Dagny): Oh, carp.

Caption (Dagny): I blew up the Porsche.

Day 6: Unstoppable

There's nothing like an ineluctable deadline to scare the shit out of you and get you to produce a whole bunch of sweet-ass word. See today, for instance: as the due date of my novel looms ever closer, a terror like unto the fear of God inspired me to write not just 5,296 words of the novel, but also 8 pages on the script for House of Mystery #21.

Possibly the most productive day I've ever had. So, 8 script pages = 4,000 words, that puts me at 9,296 words for the day. NOT BAD.

Day Five- Rehab

Yesterday was long. I was an assistant on a music video shoot that ran long. I left home at 2PM Sunday and got home at 5AM Monday morning. The sun was coming up. Slept in and moved slow when I woke up. Ran errands and played D&D. Still managed to squeeze out a couple of pages on the new thing.

This staircase was in a load of the shots.

2 comic pages--> 1000 words.

Daily total 1000 words. Running total 5635 words.

Sturges is giving me a beating. Maybe I need to pick it up a bit.

Go read 'The Curse' by Mike Norton, Matt's partner in crime on BLUE BEETLE.

.

Day 5: Great Success!

3,596 words today, and well on the downslope of the novel, to boot. Things are actually going as well as can be expected. Hopefully, this will keep up! Keep your fingers crossed.

Day 4: Disaster strikes!

Due to a large confluence of circumstances, no writing happened today. Better luck tomorrow. Pfeh! Fie upon't!

0 words.

Day Four- The Shorttimer

Took a nap and wrote a little with a ballgame on in the background. Headed out early to shoot a music video tonight. Will be rubbing shoulders with dancers & musicians at a mansion somewhere in town. Probably be gone until the wee small hours.

The rest of the script is a bit classified, so you'll have to take much on faith from here.

Today's random image is Cary Grant from To Catch a Thief. The man wore a suit.

Page Six

Panel One

Dennis is talking as he decides to trust this girl he just met moments ago. A risky move for him. Dagny is painfully sincere. She is convinced that she can do anything.

Dennis: Well... I...

Dennis: No.

Dagny: Look. I just need somebody to watch my back.

Panel Two

Dennis stands a little taller, being totally comfortable with the second position. Dagny is convincing him as Alan and Ashley move along the balcony toward another exit, one separate and distant from the one occupied by Dennis and Dagny.

Dennis: I can do that.

Dagny: You stall him and I'll pull her away.

Dennis: What then?

Dagny: I dunno. I make these things up as I go along.

Panel Three

Dennis and Dagny have turned and are heading for the balcony. The slight scar over her eye is showing.

Dennis: Sounds like I'm on a suicide mission.

Dagny: That's a little over-dramatic.

Dennis: Seems fitting for the room.

Dennis: What if we get separated?

Panel Four

Out on the balcony, they see Ashley being pulled through the other exit from the windy perch above Manhattan. Dagny is leading Dennis to the other door. She has a look of grim determination.

Dagny: I work for Neil Durst.

Dagny: Catch me there.

Panel Five

A giant black bodyguard complete with the black suit and earpiece steps into their path. His name is Reese and he knows exactly what he's doing.

Reese: Excuse me. Mister Aikman prefers to ride the elevator alone.

Dagny: What elevator?

Panel Six

Dennis remembers a few of the aspects of the lounge space. Its a good party trick.

Dennis: The elevator is about two steps from here.

Page Seven

Panel One

Dagny is inches away from Reese and it looks like she is inches from being crushed like a bug.

Caption (Dagny): Sure, I could kick this guy's ass, but this isn't the place.

Dagny: Fine.

Panel Two

Dagny leads Dennis a few steps away from Reese. She has her back to the big man who seems to be proud of the job he is doing.

Dagny (whispered): You head through the other door and make a run for the elevator.

Dennis (whispered): Its going to be hard to run on broken bones.

Panel Three

They are moving along the balcony to the door they originally came out through. Their backs are to Reese and we still see him.

Dagny: Just distract him while I make an end run. I just need a second.

Dennis: I'll run and duck.

Dagny: Thanks. I mean it.

Panel Four

Dagny is pulling a scarf from her purse as Dennis shoots through the open door.

Dagny: Good luck.

Caption (Dagny): Poor guy.

Caption (Dagny): How often do you meet a guy willing to get a black eye for you?

Panel Five

With a scarf in hand, Dagny takes a running start and leaps over the rail high above the street.

Caption (Dagny): Ashley's going to get a curfew for this.

Caption (Dagny): Assuming she's not in a car trunk by now. I can't let that thought in.

Day Three- DEXTERiffic

Watched a little football in spite of the UT bye week. Watched a couple of episodes of DEXTER from the Third Season. Why, oh why do people try to be the serial killer's best friend? Does that ever end well? Dexter Morgan is an evil Ginger Ninja. And he makes me laugh.

Enjoy this image of the Flag of the Earth that I stole from Warren Ellis.

Page Three

Panel One

In this wide panel that stretches across the top of the page, Dagny has that cranberry juice in a tall glass in front of her. She is glancing with disdain toward Ashley's back. Ash is listening to a streak of terrible pickup lines from Alan from which we are mercifully spared.

Caption (Dagny): Ash does this everytime we go out.

Caption (Dagny): She waits until I'm ready to leave and then she gets tangled up with some loser.

Caption (Dagny): Bottomless. Needy. Pit.

Panel Two

Dagny is rubbing her eyes as Alan is going on. Ash is loving the attention.

Alan: I hope you know CPR, because you're taking my breath away.

Caption (Dagny): Where are my snipers?

Off panel (Dennis): What are you drinking?

Panel Three

Dagny is a little surprised to look up and see Dennis has come up on the other side of her at the bar. Dennis is a little nerdy and intentionally casual in his sportcoat and untucked button down shirt.

Dagny: What?

Dennis: Whatever that is... It looks, I dunno, festive.

Dagny: It's a virgin Cape Cod.

Panel Four

Dennis is shaking Dagny's hand as they share something like a moment.

Dennis: Nice. My name's Dennis.

Dagny: Dagny.

Dennis: Wow. Like the...

Dagny: Yup. That's me.

Dennis: Wow.

Panel Five

Alan leads Ashley away from the bar and toward one of the balconies. Dagny totally misses this as she talks to Dennis.

Dagny: You already said that.

Dennis: I did.

Dagny: You look fairly normal, how do you know these people?

Page Four

Panel One

Dennis is fidgeting and straightening his hair as he talks to Dagny who is taking a sip of her drink.

Dennis: I'm a playwright.

Dagny: How's that going?

Dennis: Its feast or famine. You?

Panel Two

Dagny smiles and jerks a thumb over her shoulder at where she thinks her friend is still standing. Now, a guy with an intentionally bad moustache in a bowling shirt and a straw pork-pie hat is standing and waiting for the bartender.

Dagny: I'm a research assistant for a law firm. Its steady work. People are never going to stop suing each other.

Dagny: I'm with Ashley here.

Dennis: Who?

Dagny: Ash is a model...

Panel Three

Dagny is staring at the guy with the bad moustache who is staring back at her. Her drink is on the bar next to her hand. The bartender is staring at the both of them and wishing he had stayed in college.

Dagny: And she was just here.

Moustache: Hello.

Panel Four

Dagny leaves the bar without her drink and Dennis looks on. He has just been ditched. The guy with the bad moustache is talking to the bartender.

Dennis: She headed for the balcony.

Dagny: Thanks.

Panel Five

Alan is taking a pair of champagne glasses off of the tray of a waitress by the glass doors to the balcony. Dagny is half-way across the bar and heading their way.

Caption (Dagny): Oh no, champagne.

Caption (Dagny): That's Ashley's kryptonite. Right behind skinny cowboys and Irish Car Bombs.

Page Five

Panel One

This wide panel is the most important of the chapter. We see from left to right. Dagny reacting in shock in the reflection of a polished surface like a wide glass door. The reflection of Alan with his hands over the champagne glasses. There is a little circle in one of the glasses creating a lot of fizz. Alan's back is to the viewer. Ashley is on the balcony looking off at the city at night.

Caption (Dagny): WTF?

Panel Two

Dagny is still in shock as Dennis comes up toward her from behind.

Caption (Dagny): Did I just see that?

Caption (Dagny): Did that guy just drop something into her drink?

Caption (Dagny): WTF?

Panel Three

Dennis is standing there feeling like a hero for bringing Dagny's drink to her. Dagny is slowly regaining her grip on the world. She is subtly pointing at Alan and Ashley on the balcony.

Dennis: You left this at the bar.

Dagny: Who is that creep?

Dennis: That's Alan Aikman. He was up for a Best Supporting Emmy a few years back. He goes to all of these things.

Panel Four

Dagny has a one-handed grip on his jacket collar and she is pulling him in close so he can hear her clearly. Her other hand leads the eye to the balcony.

Dagny: He just put something in her drink.

Dennis: No way. Why would he...?

Dennis: Oh.

Panel Five

Dagny has her hands on her hips. Dennis is still a few mental steps behind and a bit confused.

Dagny: You have to do something.

Dennis: Me?

Dagny: Do you think I'd make this up? Do you think I'm crazy?

.

Day 3: so-so

Not as much done today as I'd hoped, but I did have a lovely time at Chris (Roberson) and Allison's house this evening, so it was worth it. Still, 3,059 words is nothing to sneeze at.

Day 2: Progress!

5,001 words on the novel today. And on my birthday no less! Here's a snippet:

Spring term has just begun and already Perrin is overloaded with schoolwork. He’s been tested for Elements and Glamour and passed both with ease. Wouldn’t father be livid if he chose to study Glamour at University! University is still two years away, though; it seems like forever.

Perrin walks through the old school garden, tucked between the library and the upper dormitory, imagining life as a famed Glamourist. He would live in a hovel in the city and smoke cigarettes and fashion glamours in a studio during the day and drink wine and make love to dangerous women at night. He would hide his noble heritage the way Rimlaire had, only revealing his lordship on his deathbed.

Perrin sits on a stone bench and looks around; the garden is deserted. He’s bought cigarettes from one of the school cooks and is working out how to smoke them the way the men in the city do, with the wrist extended, tapping off the ash with a flick of the thumb.

There’s a shout by the garden gate and Silverdun tosses the cigarette as fast as he can into a camellia bush.

A boy comes running into the garden, smacking the gate hard against the wall, the sound reverberating in the enclosed space. Hard behind him are four other boys, chasing him.

The boy being chased runs toward Perrin and trips, falling down at Perrin’s feet. It’s Bir, the son of a tea guildsman from the Western Valley. His parents donated a fortune to the school to get him accepted, Perrin’s been told.

“Help,” pleads Bir. Then the boys are on him. They’re fifth years, all tough boys, and Perrin has no interest in getting involved.

The leader of Bir’s pursuers is Tremoin, the Baronet Dequasy, who is a pompous ass and, Perrin notes with satisfaction, utterly useless at Glamour. Tremoin gets Bir down on his back and straddles him, holding a fist up to strike.

“Go on, say it!” says Tremoin. “Just say it and I’ll let you go.”

“I won’t,” says Bir.

Tremoin looks up at Perrin, noticing him for the first time. “Oh, Perrin. Lovely seeing you. Were you aware that Bir is not only common, but an Arcadian as well?”

A spike of fear plants itself in Silverdun’s belly. “I was not aware of that, no.”

Bir struggles, but Tremoin is much larger than he is.

“As an experiment of sorts,” Tremoin continues, “I’ve asked him to openly deny his god to see if he’s struck by lightning, thus demonstrating whether Aba is a wrathful god or not.”

“I take it he’s refused,” says Perrin, trying to keep his voice steady.

“Natural philosophy does not appear to be an interest of his,” Tremoin observes.
Perrin hopes that Bir will do the smart thing and deny Aba, but Bir has chosen to be a martyr. He shouts, “I will not deny Aba, not for you, not for the Queen herself!” His voice echoes in the garden.

“A man of principle!” says Tremoin, pleased.

“Boys, let’s show Perrin here what we do to men of principle.”

After the spectacle is over, Perrin goes to the library and creates a casual rampart of schoolbooks around him. He takes pen and paper from his bag and writes his weekly letter.

“Dear mother,” he writes. “I watched a boy at school get beaten senseless today because he refused to deny your god. But all is well, I suppose, as Aba will no doubt forgive the boy that administered the beating, and Bir (this is the boy who was beaten) will get his reward in Arcadia, when She Who Will Come arrives clad in alabaster armor or satin robes or whatever it is she’s to arrive in.

“While this is all well and good, it no doubt comes as little comfort to Bir, who currently lies delirious the infirmary. Or perhaps it comes as all sorts of comfort. I must admit that I find it difficult to comprehend a god so overflowing with love who yet stands idly by while one of his adherents is getting his face smashed in.

“Please say hello to father for me, if you ever see him, and to Iala as well. You are, I assume, still taking orders from the laundry maid, so be sure to treat her with due respect when you pass along my salutations.

“I remain your devoted son,”

He signs the letter and stuffs it quickly into an envelope, not reading it over. He gathers his books, walks straight to the school office, and drops the letter in the post box.

And immediately regrets it.

Day Two- Happy Birthday Matthew!

Screwed off most of the day before working on the new comic book project and came up with three pages of notes that outline the first few chapters. I may follow the new process and then write a pitch and look for a home for it. I have screwed up work habits. Somehow, I wrote a measly 2 comic pages--> 1000 words.

Daily total 1000 words. Running total 1635 words.

Page One

Panel One (half splash)

Dagny Parker and Ashley Rankin are in the ladies room in a posh restaurant/ lounge. They are primping in the mirror. Dagny is checking her hair and Ashley is touching up her lipstick. They are both dressed for a night on the town, but Dagny is more conservatively dressed and Ashley is showing a little too much skin. Dagny has light brown hair which is styled to give a quick modern look. When the light hits it right, she has a verticle scar over her left eye which clips her eyebrow. She is fit and cute. Ashley has long dark hair and works as a model. Ashley is just a little drunk.

Dagny: You okay, Ash?

Ashley: You know me Dagny, I hold my liquor.

Title: Free Falling
Part One of The Lucky Ones

Credits: Writer- Bill Williams, etc.

Panel Two

Dagny and Ashley have finished with the mirror and give each other a fist bump, possibly the whitest fist bump in the history of mankind.

Dagny: I know The Legend of Smashley.

Ashley: Smashley rules.

Dagny: Let's take one last pass and get out of here.

Panel Three

Dagny and Ashley have left the ladies room and are walking away from the closing door. Ash is pulling at Dagny's arm.

Ashley: Noooooooo.

Dagny: It's one o'clock and I have to work in the morning.

Ashley: These are my people. We have to close the place down.

Panel Four

Dagny is looking at someone ridiculous off-panel. She is mildly amused.

Dagny: These are your people. Film people.

Dagny: Me. I like movies. Less pretense.

Page Two

Panel One (another big damn panel)

We get a nice establishing shot as Dagny and Ashley are re-entering a swanky bar. Hipsters and starlets and nerdy writers are mingling thanks to that wonderful invention: alcohol. Alan Aikman is at the bar surveying the crowd. He is a vaguely creepy middle-aged actor and he will become important later.

Ashley: These meet-ups are good for my career.

Dagny: You get plenty of modeling work now.

Ashley: But those are just parts. Hands, legs, whatever. I want to use all of me.

Dagny: The world might not be ready for that.

Panel Two

Alan oozes an oily charm as he makes eye contact with Ashley who appreciates the attention.

Alan: Are you here for the Miss Universe contest? While we're waiting, could I buy you a drink?

Ashley: Heh. Sure.

Caption (Dagny): Oh God.

Panel Three

Dagny, all but forgotten, leans against the bar and talks to the overly tattooed bartender.

Dagny: Cranberry juice.

Bartender: Woah. You're not driving are you?

Dagny: Ha.

Dagny: Ha.

Roberson's Daily Result - 10/02

The thumb is healing nicely, thanks.

Kind of a strange day today. Spent much of it noodling around with the outline for a new novel, a bit of it reviewing edits and notes on some in-progress comics work, and the rest of it actually writing the proposal for the novel.

Proposals for novels are strange, chimeric creatures. I usually only do them for sequels or when working with a publisher and editor with whom I already have an existing relationship. In this instance, it's both.

My proposals, too, are kind of strange, reading less like pitches and more like super-condensed Cliff's Notes versions of the novel itself. I sometimes even do bits of dialogue back and forth, which is probably frowned upon my someone, somewhere in such situations. But I do, and I did, so there. And its because of that neither-fish-nor-fowl (or rather a-little-bit-fish-a-little-bit-fowl) that I'm going to going ahead and count up the words I wrote for it, today. What the heck, it's not a competition, is it? (And yes, Matt is right, everything is a competition.)

So I did just south of 3K words today. 2794, to be precise. And while I'm not able to share the title of the novel, the publisher to whom I'm sending it, or any of that kind of thing, the keen-eyed among you might be able to work it out from the evidence at hand.

Here's a snippet, just to prove I actually typed something today:
At a funeral, Spencer Finch glimpses a woman from his past, a woman he believed to be long dead. He attempts to uncover how she escaped death and where she has been all of these years, but what he finds only raises further questions. Whatever the answer, it somehow involves a cult author living in seclusion, an international terrorist group, a clandestine government agency, and invaders from another world.

Day 1: Not a bad start

Finished the script for JSA All-Stars #2. Eleven comic book pages, which comes out to 5,500 words? That sounds about right. Fiddled around with the novel a bit, but didn't add anything significant. Tomorrow should be a big novelizing day. One hopes...
